Short answer

A fake site tricks you into signing an approval that lets a stranger move your tokens later.

How to check it yourself

  1. Read every wallet pop-up before signing, and stop if it asks for a spending approval you did not expect.
  2. Type site addresses yourself instead of following links in replies or messages.
  3. Review your current approvals with an approval checker on a regular basis.
